For those of us in the UK, Bonfire Night is the occasion that comes to mind first when thinking about fireworks. Also known as Guy Fawkes night, and celebrated on the 5th November, the day traditionally commemorates the failure of Guy Fawkes to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The day is celebrated with Bonfires (sometimes burning an Effigy of Fawkes), and lots of fireworks. This got us thinking whether any other countries have occasions celebrated by fireworks. Read on to find out about 5 pyrotechnic celebrations from around the world!
On the 4th of July, Americans celebrate their independence from the British Empire in 1776. Fireworks are set off all around the country, and the day is usually also celebrated with barbecues with families and friends.
On the 14th July, the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille, a turning point in the French Revolution. Each year, huge firework displays are held as part of parades and other celebrations in the centre of Paris, at the Eiffel Tower. French communities around the world also put on celebrations, for example firework displays are staged in Battersea park in London!
Fireworks are often part of the Diwali celebration within India and other Indian communities around the world, helping make up the ‘festival of light’. Diwali typically lasts 5 days and is celebrated sometime between October and November each year. Although Diwali is more often associated with candles and lanterns, fireworks and bonfires do also make up a big part of the celebrations.
Each summer Japan celebrates its history through traditional firework shows. Fireworks are sold on the streets in mass amounts and many festival goers dress up in traditional/historical costumes. Uses of fireworks in this way have been part of Japanese History since the 18th Century!
The festival of Eid, celebrated by Muslims worldwide, signifying the end of Ramadan, is often celebrated with use of elaborate fireworks displays. Eid festivals are held all over the world, and range in size and spectacle!
